Business on a shoestring budget

Unemployment is rife in South Africa, as you can see by the amount of school leavers hanging out in public during working hours. Most South Africans know at least one school leaver who is unemployed.

I personally know 4 girls aged 17-23 who are unemployed, with no intention of looking for a job to support their small and unborn babies. Having a young baby and no work experience does put one in an awkward position when looking for employment, but it doesn't stop one from pursuing your own business.

There are countless options out there if you are prepared to do what it takes. Put in some effort and be motivated. Life will not throw money into your lap.

1. If you have a computer and internet you can join as many free affiliate programmes as you like and do the work required to earn the money you need. See www.madgenius.co.za for info on some tried and tested programmes.
2. Consulting is relatively easy. Find something you are better at than most people and offer your services to the public.
3. Babysitting and childcare - mothers are looking for reliable babysitters all the time.
4. Tutoring - offer extra math classes or a homework help service.
5. Desktop publishing, typing and administration for small businesses from your home.
6. Find a product which you can resell or join a Direct Sales company.
7. Personal services - elderly people and their families will be most appreciative if you took care of their shopping and errands.
8. House /Petsitter - for people away on holiday.
9. Professional Organiser - help people to get organised
10. Blogging - the latest craze which is creating millionaires all over the world. Get the hits, then sell advertising. I do what I enjoy, write about whatever or whoever inspires me on a daily basis. I get paid for my opinions elsewhere. People sell advertising on their blogs and become rich. See to the top left hand side under "Get traffic to your site". My hits are currently 22 000 for this month only and I have many subscribers.

Use your imagination and create a business for yourself - it needn't cost an arm and a leg.
